Roadburn festival is thrilled to unveil the curator for the 2011 edition of Roadburn: Sunn O))). The band, to be specific Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley, has agreed to curate our festival on Friday, April 15th, 2011 and host a special event.

As curator, Sunn O))) will personally select the bands that will play during their special event as well as perform a headline show. Sunn O))) will be Roadburn’s fourth curator, following David Tibet in 2008, Neurosis in 2009 and Triptykon’s Tom Gabriel Warrior at this year’s festival.

Right now, Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley are gearing up for two major Sunn O))) events in September: performing Altar with Boris at ATP New York and Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple, but you can expect to hear from them in the future with respect to their thoughts on the 2011 Roadburn festival and Sunn O)))’s performance.

We are overjoyed to join forces with Sunn O))) for the upcoming Roadburn festival. Their metal-based drone experimentations have proved groundbreaking and hugely influential for an entire new generation of musicians practicing the art of avant-garde metal, drone, post rock and psychedelica. Sunn O))) is also widely acclaimed for their eclectic collaborations with everyone from musicians Attila Csihar, Masami Akita (Merzbow), Boris, Steven Stapleton, Justin Broadrick, Oren Ambarchi, Ulver, Joe Preston, John Wiese, and Julian Cope to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and visual artist Banks Violette.

Greg Anderson, who is also Goatsnake’s songsmith and the entrepreneur behind Southern Lord Records, and Stephen O’Malley, a prolific improviser and composer who is well-known for being involved in Burning Witch, KHANATE, KTL and DACM/Gisèle Vienne theatre-works, have performed in different guises during various Roadburn festivals over the years, which is exactly why we felt they would be the ideal curators. Both of them consistently push the envelope musically, and one of our steadfast goals has been to make Roadburn a festival that explores the cutting edge while celebrating the familiar, too. With that in mind, we could think of no better spiritual guide for 2011 than Sunn O))).

We are truly looking forward to the new ideas and visions that the crossover drone duo will bring to the festival next year. When asked to sum up Roadburn in one word, “progressive” would be a fitting choice. Evolving and improving are part of this. The festival is a tribute to the open mindedness of its bands, curators and audience. The joy comes from expanding musical horizons, and with Sunn O))) acting as our curator we’ll definitely be in for some artistic surprises.

Roadburn Festival 2011, including Sunn O)))’s special event, will run for three days from Thursday, April 14 to Saturday, April 16 at the 013 venue and Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland. There will be an additional afterburner event on Sunday, April 17, 2011.

SWANS TO HEADLINE ROADBURN FESTIVAL 2011

Roadburn is very proud to report that New York's legendary and recently resurrected SWANS have been confirmed as the headliner at Roadburn Festival 2011.

Featuring band members Michael Gira (original SWANS), Norman Westberg (original SWANS), Christoph Hahn (mid-period SWANS and most Angels of Light ), Phil Puleo (final SWANS tour and most of Angels of Light), Chris Pravdica (Flux Information Sciences / Services/ Gunga Din) and Thor Harris (Angels of Light, currently Shearwater), SWANS will headline Roadburn on Saturday, 16 April 2011.

Emerging from the New York underground in the early 80s, SWANS made their mark with a series of highly influential dark, abrasive, brutal and growling noise albums that served as an outlet for their unsettling ruminations on alienation, depression and the depravity of man.

After 15 years of touring and constant productivity SWANS disbanded in 1997. The band’s recent revival finds Michael Gira seamlessly shifting from Angels Of Light mode to the more heavier and noisier origins of SWANS, as showcased on the band's forthcoming album, My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky, which basically starts where Soundtracks For The Blind/Swans Are Dead left off.

According to Stereogum.com: "The purists may want to crucify me, but Swans' first studio album since Soundtracks is also one of SWANS' best, most relentlessly dark and beautiful albums to date. Gira remains angry/venomous, but he's introduced a kind of time-won wisdom (and guest spot via his three-year-old daughter) you wouldn't find in the nihilistic '80s" -Brandon / Stereogum.

Roadburn Festival regards SWANS as the single biggest influence on the burgeoning doom / sludge / drone scene aside from the obvious likes of Black Sabbath. SWANS' canon of work can be heard and felt throughout the entire festival and in most of the bands invited to perform. It is a massive understatement to say that we are looking forward to the formidable and brutal sonic waves and the extreme volume levels that SWANS will bring to the festival. We are still pinching ourselves that the fever dream of this highly anticipated resurrection has become a reality.

11 y 12 de marzo en Madrid… nos vemos allí...

Curiosidad como potencial asistente, nada más.

Pues al parecer es la respuesta a los Popfest que se han celebrado en Nueva York, San Francisco, Londres y tantas otras partes del mundo en estos últimos años. Lo ha montado un grupo de gente del foro People Like Us entre los que hay gente de este foro que os podrán dar más detalles. Yo me limito a la información que han hecho llegar vía facebbok.

Se ha elegido una sala de Madrid, Clamores, para este evento y unas fechas, 11 y 12 de marzo para esta primera edición. Ahora se trabaja en cerrar el tema de los grupos, en principio con el indiepop como bandera.

Ya hay un par de fiestas de presentación preparadas:

Reconozco que hasta que no me he fijado en lo que hay entre parentesis me he quedado igual. Gran noticia.

_El Popfest es un festival de indiepop que se celebra por todo el globo, desde Nueva York hasta Roma, organizado por pequeñas células independientes entre sí. Siempre desde una total autogestión, sin patrocinadores, aunque sin renunciar a colaboraciones puntuales con colectivos afines, los Popfest del mundo conspiran para reunir a toda clase de grupos, desde leyendas de Sarah o K records, hasta nuevas promesas de Cloudberry, Wee Pop y Slumberland.

Gracias al esfuerzo participativo y desinteresado de los miembros del foro de indie pop People Like Us, será posible asistir a una primera edición en Madrid, en la Sala Clamores y otros espacios de la capital, los días 11 y 12 de Marzo del 2011.

Además, a lo largo de los próximos meses, os iremos anunciando varias fiestas de presentación del festival que se celebrarán por todo el país.

Si ha sido posible en Londres, Roma, Berlín, NYC, ¿por qué no en Madrid?

The Popfest is an Indie pop festival, which takes place all around the world, from New York to Rome. It is organized by different people in each city, but they all have things in common. Not only do they all listen to hidden underground pop labels, like Cloudberry records, Wee pop, Atomic Beat and lots more, but they also have the same spirit.

Thanks to the participation and desinteresed effort of some 'People Like Us' indiepop forum members, it will be possible that the first Madrid PopFest happens, next March 11-12, 2011, at sala Clamores as main venue, and other Madrid places.

In addition, in the upcoming months we will announce some special events to present Madrid Popfest along different spanish cities.

If it has been possible in London, Rome, Berlin, NYC, why not Madrid?
